Jake and I have been close friends for over 20 years. Through those years we’ve both shared the same tastes in music and we came of age listening to a lot of the same bands – we also played in the same band for a time in secondary school! This collaboration first began as a jam session between us in the summer of 2019, and after hearing the first songs we wrote, we realised we had something special and decided to work together towards a full release.

Diversions is a project about friendship. This 9-track release ebbs and flows through both genres and emotions to ultimately help listeners reflect on the most special people in their lives.
Handbook is a household name when it comes to creating soulful and inspiring instrumental hip-hop beats. One of the legends in the genre, the British beatmaker has garnered praise from industry legends and he’s making his 2024 debut with a bang. This time, however, the legendary producer is not alone – Jake is joined by talented York-based guitarist Tim Addison.
“Tim and I have known each other for a long time but rarely got the opportunity to create music together. He came over one afternoon a few years ago with his guitar and just started recording licks and progressions. I started sampling and arranging them and the project grew from there. Ultimately, our time creating this album was a diversion from the world around us, and helped us create something really special.“, Handbook elaborates.

Handbook
Inspired by the sound of acts like J Dilla and Flying Lotus, Handbook started his music journey after stumbling upon an MPC 1000 through a friend. The rest is history. From classically-inspired organic sounds, through raw hip-hop and futuristic beats all the way to mellow and somber vocal tracks – Jake has already shown an impressive creative approach when it comes to creating music.
