Oslo-based producer, drummer, and artist Bård Berg returns with his new EP Linje 18 – an elegant jazz house release taking its title from one of the city’s tram lines, guiding us on a journey through his beloved hometown.
Over the past few years, Bård Berg has established himself as one of the most exciting names in the Norwegian electronic and jazz scene. His talents as a trained jazz drummer and prolific producer have led to his bodies of work receiving strong critical acclaim (Oslo Beats and Oslo Beats Vol. II), with the latter named one of GAFFA’s Top 10 Albums of 2021. Bård’s signature sound is known for groove and a cinematic flair, something that is also evident through his music earning numerous international sync placements, including with Netflix.
Fusing elements of his jazz background with house rhythms, Berg’s latest project Linje 18 continues his signature approach of drawing on local geography and identity, building on the highly-praised Oslo Beats series where Oslo locations also played a central role.
Each track is named after a stop along Line 18, and the first single, “Welhavens gate”, captures the pulse of the early morning rush. Driven by a groovy, infectious bassline and striking synth work, the track feels like moving through the city itself, driving past lights and shifting urban landscapes.
The second single, “Stensgata”, channels the spirit of youth with buzzing energy, restless excitement, and a sense of possibility. Warm horn and synth arrangements gliding over beats exude a feeling of joy and a readiness to live. This energy is kept alive towards the ending moments of the EP thanks to the Nebulae Waves remix. The colourful remix of “Bislett” comes as no surprise considering Nebulae’s fascination with jazz across his multiple monikers and impact on the jazz house scene.
The result is a project that is a reflective, intimate piece yet bursting with life thanks to Bård’s knack for colourful rhythms and textures.
